2012 August

August 4th, 2012

Our First Week of school started on August 6. A visiting team from Victory Baptist Church in Kansas helped us to get ready and they presented a VBS program 🙂

In addition to touring Vieques and doing some sight seeing their first week, they painted a dorm room and our picnic tables, power washed many parts of the school, and cut the grass without a lawn tractor.

They were SO happy to see students – and leave the hot outdoor and manual labor for student-centered activities!

Our Second Week of school saw members of Maranatha Baptist Church of Ceiba PR bring us LUNCH!

The Calvary Bible Church of Hanover PA work team:

Every school day morning started with chapel and the team joined us by lifting their hands in praise to our God.

Various jobs followed. Here the team leader Tom is teaching a student how to dig a hole.
Later they placed a new post for the mailbox and poured cement around it. Still later, the ladies planted some new plants at the base of the post to prevent weeds from growing there. Still later, the mail man came and put letters into the mailbox on the new post. We all smiled.

Team Leader Tracy had prepared a story to tell to the students. She did a great job – can you see the little boys’ attentiveness from the front row?

We had a field trip one day and the team organized sandwich making and then prepared the cooler with drinks, sandwiches, snacks, etc for the day.

The team did fun activities in the afternoons. This day, they helped the students to tie-dye shirts. The resulting shirts are fabulous!

On their first Saturday, we went to El Yunque National Forest. The team enjoyed a hike to La Mina Falls and various other sites around the forest.

The day AFTER the student award ceremony (which the team did 99% of the work for),
we loaded up two 15 passenger vans – one with only half of the seats – and went to Orocovis to help the Santos family with some jobs around their home.

New curtains made in and brought from Hanover were hung in the kitchen and living room,
windows were repaired, and new aluminum door on the kitchen side of the house replaced a rotting weathererd wooden door.

While there, team members cleaned the kitchen shelves and installed shelf lining paper.
Others cleaned the bathroom and helped to hang up clothes on hangers which we had taken for this purpose.

You can see Teodoro’s smile here. And the smiles on his daughters’ faces as they made new friends with the CBC girls were priceless also. We don’t know exactly how the family and house got into the state of disrepair in which we have found them, but we thank God for the circumstances that led their second oldest daughter to ESD 2 years ago. Pray with us for God’s leading into what other ways we can assist this family.

FOR NOW…
We have a new list of jobs for next time:
sheets (3 double beds and two singles) requested colors include

  • PINK (double – oldest daughter’s room),
  • YELLOW (double – parents room),
  • and PINK and BLUE with butterflies and happiness (youngest 2 daughters’ room)

We would like to provide curtains matching the sheets and comforters.
The house is in the mountains and they do not need fans to stay cool.

Also clothesline and clothespins for the clothes drying area under the house.

Each time, we go, we can do a little bit. Mostly we can show that someone knows and someone cares. We really want them to understand the GOD know and GOD cares. Pray with us to this end.

If anyone is interested in helping with these projects, please do not hesitate to send an e-mail through the contact page or from your e-mail to info@cscdluquillo.com

2012 March

March 4th, 2012

A work team from Smith Falls / Whitby Ontario Canada is visiting from March 8 to 18th.

Pray for their skin (sunburn!), safety (working on security bars on the second level), and for God to lead them as they have their devotions and join in chapel times.

13 March – the team is about half way through their time with us. There is more red skin 🙁 but everyone is working hard and keeps smiling.

Evening group time is sweet. Painting the security bars is tedious work

Morning chapel gets everyone signing. The visiting team enjoys some “help” from the ESD students

Jen Johnson

January 4th, 2012

Served at ESD:
July 2006 – July 2012

Sent to ESD by:
Glendora Friends Church of Glendora California

How Jen Came to ESD

Jennifer Johnson visited a friend working at E.S.D. in 2006. After visiting for a month, Jen left, sure that she would not be returning any time soon. In a matter of weeks, God changed her heart and Jen applied to work at E.S.D. as a teacher.

Jen had not complete the degree necessary for her to obtain her certification as a teacher in Puerto Rico so returned to that task quickly finishing off the required work for an Associate’s degree and occupying a classroom at ESD. She is completing her work towards a Bachelor’s degree and is contemplating her next step in academia from her classroom in Luquillo.

Jim O’Brien, ESD’s California-located maintenance man, accompanied the team of college girls what came with Jen on her first visit. Since that time, Jim, a retired San Dimas police officer, has continued to visit the school at irregular intervals working along with teams to coordinate the efforts to keep the buildings and grounds in good shape.

Adriana Toro

December 4th, 2011

adriana 2009Adriana finished her time of study at ESD in May 2009 and then returned to work with us as a multi-purpose helper in August 2009. Adriana performs many vital jobs around the school and we are thankful for her hard work as she helps us.The 2009 – 2010 school year saw Adriana trying out a number of jobs around the school. During the 2010-2011 school year Adriana worked as Betsy’s in-class assistant and our kitchen supervisor. She continued into the 2011-2012 school year as our kitchen supervisor but due to health problems has been unable to return to work in a part-time capacity. Adriana continues to visit and help out at the school as she is able.
